Outreach

Listed below you will find a description of some of the Outside Missions that our congregation has selected to support. By committing to support these missions our gifts are spread scross the community and appreciated by many.

Appalachian Service Project
ASP is a Christian ministry, open to adults and youth entering the 9th grade and above, which addresses the housing needs of the Central Appalachia region. The goal is to eradicate substandard housing in rural areas of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia while creating relationships and experiences that transform the volunteers and the families they serve. The trip takes place in June, after a series of lunches and study sessions in which the volunteers prepare for their trip. Visit our Youth Programs page to learn more about this Ministry.

Bay Interfaith Housing (aka The Knickerbocker)
As a Christian outreach, the mission of Bay Interfaith Housing is to meet the spiritual, social, economic, and physical needs of older adults, regardless of faith, by providing safe, secure, sanitary , reasonably priced and well managed housing facilities. In addition, each facility will make available to their residents various services, activities and programs that will increase the quality of life and independence of the oder adults they serve. The parishoners at Bay UMC assist with this outreach by providing an annual Thanksgiving dinner for the residents, providing refreshments as they become available, and taking financial collections throughout the year that are then transferred to the Knickerbocker.

Berea Children's Home

The mission of Berea Children's Home and Family Services is to improve the lives and opportunities of children, families, and adults by providing an integrated system of effective behavioral health and family support services. The programs and services they offer include assessment, child abuse prevention, child care, counseling, employement, financial support, foster care, group homes, in-home services, mentoring, residentional treatment, school age programs, sexual abuse programs, and summer programs, among others. Family Promise of Greater Cleveland
Formerly known as The Interfaith Hospitality Network, Family Promise of Greater Cleveland provides transitional housing to homeless moms, dads, or couples and their children for up to 60 days. Volunteers provide both practical support and caring hospitality for guest families. During a Host Week, Bay UMC needs about 30-50 volunteers to oversee the hospitality program, plan meals, and support the guest families throughout their stay.

Our 2011 host weeks are April 3-10, July 10-17, November 6-13. Mark your calendars!

Near West Side Hunger Center

The Near West Side Hunger Center is one of three "Food Centers of Excellence" operated by the West Side Ecumenical Ministry organization. Their mission is to save Clevelanders from having to choose between buying groceries or life-sustaining medication -- between paying rent or feeding their children. Each center provides thousands of our friends, neighbors and relatives with a three-day supply of emergency food once per month, as needed. They also provide information, referrals and support services, including food stamp application processing. In addition to transferring the generous donations from Bay UMC parishoners, our congregation takes a special "Egg" collection each month, which in turn is used to buy eggs that are taken to the Hunger Center. During 2008 parishoners at Bay UMC donated over $4,800 in eggs to this mission.

North Coast Health Center

Through the generous donations of our parishoners, Bay UMC assists the North Coast health Ministry in providing healthcare services to eligible individuals in western Cuyahoga and eastern Lorain counties. They are a faith-based free clinic which provides primary health care, specialty referrals, prescription assistance and health education to low-income individuals and families.
